'Scandal' returns after two-month hiatus, reminder of what's going on

The irony in TV writer and executive producer Shonda Rhimes tweeting to fellow TV writer/producer Mindy Kahling "Um @mindykaling? I have to wait until April to find out what happens?!" wasn't missed by gladiators.

After a big kissing plane scene on "The Mindy Project" that left viewers wondering what would become of Dr. Mindy Lahiri and Dr. Danny Castellano, two months does seem like a long time. (That and wondering whether Chris Messina will ever dance like Aaliyah again.) But "Scandal" fans were already tapping their fingers since Dec. 12, waiting for a new episode of "Scandal." So Ms. Rhimes, now you can relate to the gladiators. The good news is that "Scandal" is back to business on Thurs., Feb. 27.

Need a refresher on what happened in Season 3's "A Door Marked Exit"?

  • Vice President Sally Langston (played by Kate Burton) stabbed her husband Daniel Douglas Langston (played by Jack Coleman) in the back after he was caught in an affair with a man. He refused to continue to hide his sexual identity during her presidential run.
  • Cyrus Beene (played by Jeff Perry) was stunned by his husband James Novak (played by Dan Bucatinsky) falling for a planned affair with Daniel. But his bigger focus is making sure the VP keeps up the lie that Daniel died of a heart attack.
  • James used Cyrus' guilt about being tricked into the affair to work his way up to the White House Press Secretary.
  • FLOTUS Mellie Grant (played by Bellamy Young) used Sally's murder as an opportunity to blackmail the VP out of running for president in the next campaign.
  • Olivia Pope (played by Kerry Washington) figured out where her mother Maya Lewis (played by Khandi Alexander) disappeared to and who is the real trickster between her mom and dad Rowan Pope (played by Joe Morton). Olivia realized that the bomb that killed 329 people on a plane to spare thousands of people in London actually didn't have a bomb inside. Maya may have lied to get Rowan to blow up the plane so she could help her allies and escape. Rowan did not deny the lie he'd been telling Olivia for 22 years.
  • Rowan ended up tied to a chair in the Pentagon courtesy of President Fitzgerald Grant (played by Tony Goldwyn) while they waited for Maya's plane to land.
  • Abby Whelan (played by Darby Stanchfield) needed David Rosen (played by Joshua Malina) to send her Maya's file after convincing David to take her off of the no-fly list.
  • Maya killed the pilots on her plane headed to Hong Kong, and the plane was found at Darkhan in Mongolia instead. However, by the end of the episode she was talking on a cell in front of the White House.
  • Quinn Perkins (played by Katie Lowes) took out the tooth tracking device that Huck (played by Guillermo Díaz) shoved into her mouth after pulling out a tooth. Quinn is now mixed up in Wonderland, sleeping with and partnering with Charlie (played by George Newbern), working for Rowan, and returned to Charlie after the disgusted reaction from Huck when she revisited Olivia's office.
  • Jake Ballard (played by Scott Foley) is still the only guy who repeatedly challenges Olivia when she's dead wrong, and this time around his issue is her coming down so hard on Huck for torturing Quinn. But he also told Olivia he loves her and came to see her just to say goodbye. What he didn't tell her was he is now the commander of B613, took much pleasure in letting Rowan know he'd been replaced and called President Fitz to confirm that Rowan knew the arrangement.
