People have been warned for years about using safety measures and precautions when using an ATM machine. Now, Boynton Beach police are warning ATM users to watch out for a new scam that could make them fall victim to identity theft.
ATM scam artists have a new device that grabs ATM card information from ATM machines.
This information was gathered by ATM technicians who repair these machines throughout Palm Beach County. The workers discovered that the scam artists have been cutting the bottom of the ATM card readers to remove the microchip. They then insert their own battery-operated card reader to skim customers' account information.
How to protect yourself from this? Police say to look out for ATM machines that are not dispensing money. If you run into a malfunctioning ATM machine, odds are it has been tampered with by crooks.
Police also suggest that customers check an ATM machine, making sure it looks functional, before withdrawing money. If it looks tampered with in any way or damaged in any way, do not use it.
Lastly, if anyone runs into an ATM machine that looks like it has been tampered with, please call and report the machine to police immediately.
