Well it looks like our beloved MSN messenger is going to be retired during the first few months of 2013. This according to an official blog post by Skype, of whom is now owned by Microsoft.
We will retire Messenger in all countries worldwide in the first quarter of 2013 (with the exception of mainland China where Messenger will continue to be available).
What's happening is, with the new version of Skype, Skype 6.0, MSN Messenger users are able to log into Skype using their Microsoft account. Once they do they'll see their Messenger contacts in Skype as well. As you can see by the image above, users can also sign into Skype with their Facebook account too.
Skype/Microsoft say their goal is to deliver the best communications experience for everyone, and that means by making things simpler by combining the services.
We knew something like this was coming and personally I'm glad it's here. I haven't used MSN Messenger in a few years but it's good to know there will be better features for me when it comes to communicating with my MSN list through Skype if I wanted to.
