I made a conscious decision to do something that I enjoyed from the past to help bring me back into yoga with some dignity.
Pilates is saving my yoga. This is the fasted way to build strength and firm up joints that I know. It's simple, accessible and very effective. From the book research I've done, I've found that there are really only a limited number of exercises. So, the best thing to do is just pick a book. Any book on Pilates will do. But DVD's are more effective. I really like the Gaiam series.
It always seemed that Pilates and yoga are very similar, and almost mimic each other. The major contrast being the different "schools" of yoga, or practice types. But while yoga is a way for the body and mind, Pilates has the sexy reputation of giving people "dancer's bodies." I'm not gonna lie. I want that too.
Without building the foundation, it's hard to jump back in. It is like cutting a new key for an old lock.
With Pilates, I can enjoy the yoga experience all the more. It's possible to get through a flow or series without seriously damaging yourself. I'm a serial hamstring puller. Never fails. Not only was this minimized with Pilates plus yoga, it had a very short stay.
In the elementary school experience of my rebuild, Pilates is the best kindergarten teacher to have.
