Paramount has issued an official statement acknowledging the audio synch issues in the Sapphire Series Blu-ray Edition of Saving Private Ryan due to complaints from both United States and European (UK and Benelux countries) consumers. (Saving Private Ryan Sapphire Series Blu-ray was first released in the UK on April 26, 2010 and then in the U.S. on May 4, 2010.) Quick to address the matter, Paramount has asked stores to stop sales and recalled all the defective discs. Paramount and Technicolor are already working hard to get the issue fixed and the replacements should be available in retail stores starting sometime next week, no later than May 18, 2010. The error-free Saving Private Ryan Sapphire Series Blu-ray will have a yellow UPC barcode on the back.
Since the UK release of Saving Private Ryan Sapphire Series Blu-ray was a week earlier than the U.S. release, there were already complaints from UK consumers by the time it was released in the U.S. According to Blu-ray.com site reviewer Martin Liebman, he had first reported the issue regarding the U.S. release back in May 4, 2010 in his review of Saving Private Ryan Sapphire Series Blu-ray stating, "If there's a misstep in the track, there appears to be a slight lip synch issue before the battle of Ramelle, found around the 2:06 mark in the film as a character shares a story about one of his brothers' girlfriends and their encounter in a barn. The effect was blatantly obvious when viewing the film with a combination of a Panasonic DMP-BDT300 Blu-ray player and Denon AVR-3808 audio receiver connected via HDMI (with the audio stream sent through a separate HDMI cable from the video stream), but seemed to be less of an issue when the Denon was paired with a PlayStation 3, also connected via HDMI."
For consumers who have already purchased Saving Private Ryan Sapphire Series Blu-ray, you may opt to bring the defective product back to the store for an exchange once the error-free version is available. Feel free to print this article to notify the retailer of the recall, if necessary.
Amazon.com will be contacting customers on their exchange process for the defective Saving Private Ryan Sapphire Series Blu-ray. Follow the return instructions and select "Defective/Does Not Work Properly" as the reason for the return. Print out the free pre-paid return shipping label and Amazon.com will refund your monies upon receipt. Several consumers have already received an email from Amazon.com and it included a $5 promotional certificate that you may use to place a new order for the error-free Saving Private Ryan Sapphire Series Blu-ray.
If you cannot obtain a refund or exchange from the retailer, you can contact the toll-free exchange hotline that Technicolor has set up. You will need to provide your name, shipping address and telephone number where you can be reached. As soon as the replacement discs are ready, they will be sent out. The toll-free numbers are: US and Canada: 888-370-8621, UK: 08000-852-613.
