With a little preparation and planning, you can save a big chunk of money by shopping at Smith's and utilizing the tips below. If you are not not used to shopping using coupons, deals, apps and a list, then this will be a big transition for you. It will take more time but will be worth it when you see that you saved $25 on your grocery trip, saved $0.20/gallon on your gas and will get back $5 cash from an app or two. Here's how:

Digital coupons

If you haven't already, do sign up for a Fresh Values Card from Smith's. Register for an account online and start loading coupons onto your card. Once you check out, there's no need to pull up the coupons on the app. As long as you give your card or your phone number while checking out, you are good to go. It is recommended you sign up on the Smith's website rather than the Kroger one. Although they have the same digital coupons, they don't show the same local sales. They also have digital coupons for fresh fruits, veggies, seafood and meat! Also, be sure to look out for the weekly free digital downloads every Friday! There's also an app available for smartphones.

The sales at Smith's change weekly and sometimes they have really awesome deals. For example, when you see your favorite item on the $5 off 5 items or more deal, this is the time to stock up. If you stack the sales with paper coupons, you can get items for really cheap sometimes.

Paper coupons

Digital coupons should take care of the majority of your items, but you may want to buy a different item not on the list. You can email manufacturers, save the coupons from the mail or cut coupons off advertisements you find. You might want to invest in a coupon holder to save these for later dates.

Save money on gas

Each dollar spent equals one point for gas. If you add the digital coupon for 2x the points on weekends, you'll double your points right there alone if you shop on Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Take your own bags and you get an additional 10 points per bag. The points add up fast when you do these bonus items. Don't forget to take the survey after your trip with the code printed on the receipt for an additional 50 points. You could be saving up to $1/gallon if you did all these items.

Get real money back after your purchases

Yes, there are apps that give you money back for buying certain items. Saving Star allows you to connect to your Fresh Values Card (also known as Kroger card) and upload deals to your card. If you buy that item in store, you will get that money loaded back to your card. Look out for their fresh deals that change weekly like sweet potatoes, tomatoes, bananas, corn and more. There's also a free Friday download on there as well.

Checkout 51 gives you money back for buying items on their list. Simply take a picture of your receipt on their app after buying groceries and the money is loaded onto your account. Ibotta is a similar process.

As long as you plan ahead of time utilizing these tips, you'll start saving a lot of money on groceries!
