A low carb diet has been one of the many diets that have been a mainstay of those trying to live a healthier life style. The most famous was the Atkins Diet back in the 1990s that gain a large following of folks attempting to drop weight. What they didn’t realize is that perhaps less carbs or “grain” derived food could also be putting brain power at risk.

Recent studies are beginning to create a case that carbohydrates are literally rotting our brains. This often termed “Grain Brain” puts many people at risk for Alzheimer’s, cognitive issues, and dementia – even other health concerns like depression, epilepsy and migraines.

Dr., David Perlmutter a neurologist, recently wrote the book on this issue, titled “Grain Brain.” In a recent interview Perlmutter said, “The vast majority of us don’t realize that our seemingly “healthy” daily habits are silently aggravating our nervous systems and setting us up for serious brain ailments. “

There is research to back up the claims of Dr. Perlmutter. A study published in Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease showed that senior who had eaten and continued to eat a high-carb diet were three times as likely to develop “mild cognitive impairment.”

With this evidence whether via academic studies or through life examples, it seems that reducing the amount of carb intake per day is a key to a healthy lifestyle, both from a weight perspective, but increasingly from a mental capacity perspective.
