Savannah stands as a dedicated member of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) Coastal Empire Council to raise the next generation of youth who would become members of a “more conscientious, responsible and productive society.” Savannah's BSA supports 11 county areas and serves over 7,000 young men and women annually in coastal Georgia through inner city Scout Reach programs, Scout Troops, Venture Crews, and Learning for Life and Explorer programs.
Savannah's Coastal Empire Council envisions a program that empowers any Scout to acquire valuable leadership skills, work in a team environment and respect and protect their natural resources. Through events like the Winter Hornaday Camp at the Black Creek Scout Reservation in Sylvania, Georgia, the BSA teaches Scouts to make the world a better place through conservation and Scouting.
The BSA Coastal Empire Council also wants to nurture cultural and religious appreciation in their Scouts. To this end, the Savannah Historical Hike “is dedicated to some of the early believers that formed and built some of the finest Churches and Synagogues in America.” By participating in this hike, Scouts will learn about the early history of Savannah, its early settlers and the cultures and religions they brought with them. They will see the first synagogue built in the United States by 42 Jewish immigrants who landed in Savannah in 1733, as well as, the First African Baptist Church built in 1855 with money black slaves raised in the time when slaves were not allowed to own property.
Yet another adventure that offers education and fun for young adult and adult Scouts alike is High Adventure Sea Kayaking. This activity strives to teach total immersion in a team, “to learn new skills, work together to overcome obstacles, develop new friendships, and build lasting memories.” The Scouts find the opportunity to experience nature at its best by watching Dolphins as they surface beside their kayaks, otters, alligators, birds and occasional sea turtles. Additionally, they learn to navigate local rivers, and sharpen their camping, team-building, leadership, menu planning and safety skills.
In all, the BSA Coastal Empire Council offers their Scouts the chance to push themselves and receive the satisfaction from knowing what they can do and that they can do it.
