Savannah dog owners now being leashed

Have a dog, live in Savannah and go to Forsyth Park? Ever see dogs running around with a leash following behind them and no owner or maybe no leash at all? Maybe you’re sitting at the park with your children and a cute doggy comes up to greet you, or maybe it is a much bigger dog that frightens your child? Been playing Frisbee or something and stepped in something that you should not have? Well these are all possibilities that the Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Department are now trying to stop.

If a dog owner is at a park and their dog is not on a hand-held leash then that dog owner will be served a $50 fine. Now if a dog has to relieve himself, dog owners will now need to carry potty-bags to dispose of it in a trash facility. If the dog owner gets caught not picking up after their dog they will be served a $60 fine. These fines could add up over a day or a week if the pet owner is not responsible. This is something the Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Department will be watching out for and enforcing.

It seems that most people go to the park, find a friend, let the dogs play and that’s that. This leash law or pick-up law is nothing new just not one that the police department really went out of their way to enforce. The police department has been receiving plenty of complaints now that is making this a hot issue for them. Some residents are complaining because of loose dogs more so that anything else. The residents just don’t want to have a bad situation with their own dogs that are confined to a leash. Some leashed dogs have been attacked by off-leashed dogs and they just want everyone safe.

The city just wants dog owners to be more responsible for their dogs by keeping a leash on them and picking up after them. They want safe and clean parks.
