In a heinous deed, Rudolph William Poppe, of Savage, Minn. pleaded guilty on Wednesday to beating his 15-year-old golden retriever over the head 15 times with a sledgehammer last July reported the Twincities.com.
In a plea bargain, Poppe, 71, pleaded guilty to felony animal cruelty and obstructing the legal process.
The heart wrenching scene began when a neighbor heard yelling and screaming coming from Poppe's home at the 13400 block of Alabama Ave. The neighbor witnessed Poppe pick up a sledgehammer and repeatedly beat his dog named Millie over the head. Neighbors screamed for Poppe to stop and immediately called 911.
By the time authorities arrived, Poppe had then placed a plastic bag over Millie's head in an attempt to suffocate her. The dog tried to get up when police arrived. She was taken to an emergency veterinary clinic where she was diagnosed with a severely fractured skull and sadly was humanely euthanized.

Poppe told his neighbors he wanted to "put the dog out of its misery" because she was old, barely able to walk, and had defecated in the house.
Humane advocates and animal lovers were outraged at the egregious act and have been actively following the case. A Facebook page called Justice 4 Millie continues to advocate for harsher punishments for those convicted of animal cruelty.
At the Scott County Courthouse, Poppe admitted his actions caused the death of Millie. Poppe faces a maximum of 90 days in jail for the obstruction of legal process charge and up to two years in prison for felony animal cruelty. Prosecutors have filed a notice of intent to seek increased penalties for the crime.
Sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 3.
Rest in peace Millie.
