You don't have to be of German descent to love sauerkraut and what it adds to a hot dog or kielbasi or to a pork roast. If you are a Clevelander who is a fan of the cabbage-based sauerkraut then you don't want to miss the 44th annual Ohio Sauerkraut Festival being held in Waynesville, Ohio on Saturday, October 12 and Sunday, October 13.
Ohio Sauerkraut Festival Taking place on Main Street and side streets of Waynesville, the Ohio Sauerkraut Festival gives visitors a chance to indulge in some traditional sauerkraut dishes and to try some more creative sauerkraut culinary delights including sauerkraut ice cream, sauerkraut donuts, sauerkraut pizza, sauerkraut fudge and sauerkraut cookies.
This year's Festival is expected to attract 400,000 visitors and serve 11,000 pounds of sauerkraut.
Awards will be given out at the Ohio Sauerkraut Festival in categories like "Largest Cabbage," "Greenest Cabbage" and "Most Congenial Cabbage".
The Ohio Sauerkraut Festival is also one of the largest Arts & Crafts shows in the United States with more than 450 artisans from 28 different states displaying their wares for purchase. Items for sale include candles, metal crafts, jewelry, clothing, glass and ceramics, country crafts, baskets, wreaths, photography, wood crafts, toys, soaps, dolls, per items and holiday crafts.
Other food available for purchase at the Festival include cabbage rolls, cabbage soup, egg rolls, pork & sauerkraut combination dinners and German sundaes. Non-sauerkraut items will also be available.
There will be plenty of free, live musical entertainment at the Festival featuring dancers and various musical groups.
Hours for the Ohio Sauerkraut Festival are 9 a.m. - 8 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is free and parking is free.
