A Saudi princess is free after an abrupt move in this U.S. case puts Saudi Princess Meshael Alayban in the clear of human trafficking charges. This 42-year-old princess is free, despite the prosecutor having "reasons to believe" that allegations against her are true, according to Yahoo News on Sept. 20.
Princess Meshael Alayban is one of six wives of a grandson of Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah. She was facing up to 12 years in prison if she was found guilty of the charges of human trafficking. These charges stem from a housekeeper who worked for the Saudi Princess in her California home.
This princess is accused of enslaving a woman from Kenya, taking her passport, making her work long hours seven days a week and paying her only $220 a month for her housekeeping wages. Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas unexpectedly dismissed this case this week because the case lacked evidence. Rackauckas told reporters:
"The allegations were strong and we had reasons to believe they were true. We were certainly dealing with a family who could leave the jurisdiction in a short time, so I think bringing the case under the circumstances was the right thing to do at the time. It did appear the evidence corroborated (the claims), but as we looked deeper into it, it didn't."
Why did this suddenly look like a case that the prosecutor could never win? Apparently the family lawyers of this Saudi princess have fired off their defense strategy, which includes accusing this unnamed housekeeper of lying and being able to suggest a motive for this lie.
The lawyers say the housekeeper was looking for a visa to stay in the United States. Paul S. Meyer, one of the attorneys for the Saudi Princess said “it was obvious she was seeking a visa.” He also said that he suspected this the moment he heard of the case. “It doesn’t pass the smell test” said Meyer.
It appears that the prosecuting attorney may agree with him as far as not “passing the smell test” because he won’t even venture an attempt at letting the courts decide which of these two woman are not telling the truth. This is despite his stated fact that he believes the housekeeper is telling the truth.
