Hurricane Earl swept through on the Friday before the 17th Annual Saturday in the Park 5k held on Saturday, September 4, 2010 in Holmdel Park located in Holmdel, NJ. The hurricane was a bit of a fizzle but it did leave behind some glorious weather for the race that attracted over 400 women from all over the state and beyond.

The course the women took is one of the toughest 5k courses in the area. The 400 plus women lined up near the visitors center at the park for a wide open start and were quickly funneled into a trail which led them up a seemingly never ending trail up through the woods in the park. There was little relief at the top as they made their way to the infamous “bowl”. There they started a tough incline that beat up their already weakened legs. Then a short flat area before entering the woods and a mostly downward trail to an opening to a wide grassy field that led to a clear quarter mile to the finish.

The top finishers were Kristen Traub of Wayne, NJ in a time of 19:18, followed by Alyssa Laguardia also of Wayne in 20:02 and then Caroline Ticse of Millstone in a time of 20:04.

Kids races were held after the 5K on the field and it attracted many participants clad in orange t-shirts.

Runners were treated to many post race snacks and refreshments afterwards.

Jim Buckler the President of the Jersey Shore Running Club and Penny Hinck the Race Director presented awards to the top finishers, age group winners and special awards for mother – daughter and sister teams. Awards were also presented to the largest groups of teams.

Dawn Ciccone won the Mary Conry Award as the first Jersey Shore Running Club finisher and Jack and Diane Cheer were recognized with the Chuck Whelan Memorial Award for their efforts in supporting the race over the years.

The event benefitted Manna House of Cliffwood Beach, Providence House of Catholic Charities in Ocean County, and Spring House, Eatontown. Since its inception, Saturday in the Park has raised over $190,000 and has created greater public awareness of options and services available to women

A lucky runner also won a bike donated by Brielle Cyclery and Jack and Diane Cheer.
