Did you know Etsy has its own Twitter account?  You probably did because they have over 1,200,000 followers.  They are quite active on it, with lists they've created and organized so you can see who they are following in different artisan categories.  Very handy!

Did you also know Etsy had a Facebook page?  Maybe that was self evident as well.  There are close to 148,000 people 'liking' it.

Sara Schultz of Catch a Star Creations is an Etsy artist fully cognizant of the fact that Twitter and Facebook are great ways to market your Etsy site.  Sara makes suncatchers and other window decorations.  She has a strange calling to her work, which she reveals in her interview.

Tell us a  little about yourself.

Schultz:  Well, my name is Sara Schultz.  By day I am a physicist, currently teaching in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Minnesota State University Moorhead (MSUM).  By night (or whatever time I have when I am not teaching), I play with beads and wire.  I love sunlight, which is reflected in my work.

Tell us about the handmade product you sell.

Schultz:  Mostly I focus on various styles of suncatchers and window decor.  I also make mirrored/beaded mobiles and dabble into some jewelry.  My passion is color and light, so if it has to do with that, I probably do it too.

How did you get started making and selling your product?

Schultz:  It all started about 5 years ago in graduate school down in Columbia, SC.  I needed something to get my mind off of all the physics and an outlet for stress. I found that sunshine made me happy and I wanted to see how I could share that joy with others.  I had inspiration from a mobile I had purchased and thought I could at least replicate if not improve on the design.  I have even brought some of the training I received as a physics student into my craft, namely soldering.

What do you like most about selling online?

Schultz:  I like the convenience and the multitude of options and tools out there at our disposal.  I can sit in my PJs on the couch and be listing items and promoting my shop, not too much stress there.  Much easier, in many ways, than doing art/craft shows.

What do you like least?

Schultz:  That stems from what I like most about doing shows, the interaction.  I love to talk to people about what I do and definitely enjoy the positive feedback.  The look on someone’s face when they have found something they just ‘have to have’ is priceless.  I also struggle with getting a good item image.  I’m continually working on that.

What word of advice do you have for our readers interested in selling their products online?

Schultz:  Do it!  Don’t be afraid to make that leap.  Once you do, be sure to get involved with online communities and forums.  Not only is it a great way to get your name out there, but also a great resource for new sellers.  I have learned SO much from the wisdom of others.
