National-scale opportunities to help those affected by the disaster in Haiti are all over the news, from donation-texts to celebrity telethons. But to aid in the local effort to help quake victims, USC grad and Education Pioneers Fellow Maritess Panlilo organized this weekend's Heart Songs for Haiti, a four-hour music series at the Venice Arts gallery. For a "pay what you can" contribution to Partners in Health, Doctors Without Borders, or the William J. Clinton Foundation, attendees can enjoy sets from folk-popper and Shawn Colvin opening act John Torres, singer-songstress Tiff Jimber, and a slate of other local artists. (A similar fundraiser will be held in New York City on the same night, so those willing to engage in a little West Coast-East Coast rivalry can bust out their check-books for bragging rights.) Beer, wine, light snacks, and a trendy venue make this a Saturday night you can pat yourself on the back for. AMAZING RACE winner BJ Averell MC's. Venice Arts is located at 1702 Lincoln Blvd. in Venice, and doors will be open 7-11pm this Saturday, January 30th. Donations accepted by cash or check.
