Pope Francis has announced a prayer vigil for peace in Syria to be held this Saturday in St. Peter's Square. The Columbus chapter of Muslims for Progressive Values is holding an interfaith prayer vigil in solidarity on Saturday, September 7 from 1 to 4 p.m. in front of the Federal Building, 200 North High Street in downtown Columbus.
All people of faith and conscience are invited to attend. "Let us gather in silent prayer, in penitent prayer, in sincere prayer that God may bring our hearts to true peace, that we may become fit instruments of peace in this world," said Frank Parmir, one of the organizers of the Columbus vigil. "May we be an encouragement to the people, for peace."
"We will gather in prayer and in a spirit of penance, invoking God's great gift of peace upon the beloved nation of Syria and upon each situation of conflict and violence around the world," the pope said on September 1. "Humanity needs to see these gestures of peace and to hear words of hope and peace."
The Columbus chapter of Muslims for Progressive Values meets every Friday from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the First Unitarian Universalist Church.
