This Saturday, November 2 is national “Learn to Homebrew” Day.
Homebrewing is now legal in all 50 states for the first time since Prohibition, even though President Jimmy Carter signed a bill legalizing homebrewing in the United States on 10/14/78.
Making wine at home became legal with the end of Prohibition in 1933. It took brewers 45 years to get the same permission.
Homebrewing is inherently green and many, if not most, craft brewers started as home brewers. Tom Kehoe, one of the founders of Yards Brewing Company in Philadelphia, had a brewery in the closet of his college dorm room.
Celebrate Learn to Homebrew Day! Visit the American Homebrewers Association page and find an event near you.
If you can’t find one then find a local craft brewery, settle in with a flight, talk about and drink beer and celebrate homebrewing as a green hobby and one of the roots of the modern craft beer movement.
