Diabetes and the heart. 

  • Diabetic patients are at higher risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Recent evidence suggests that cardiac diseases such as hypertension, coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, and cardiomyopathy are associated with diabetes and hyperglycemia.

  • Metabolic syndrome identified as impaired glucose metabolism, central obesity, elevated blood pressure, and dyslipidemia, increases the risk of cardiac organ damage, long-term risk of cardiovascular events and risk of developing diabetes mellitus.
  • Obesity is associated with a higher risk of developing diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and left ventricular hypertrophy.
  • An Increase in resting heart rate is associated with an increased risk for type 2 diabetes mellitus in patients with obvious vascular diseases, particularly in middle-aged patients.
