January 6 is Epiphany, when Christians commemorate the visit of the Three Magi to the baby Jesus. Many families of Hispanic descent celebrate the holiday as El Dia de los Reyes, The Day of Kings.

Children place their shoes under their bed and go to sleep to await a visit from the Three Wise Men. In the morning they wake up to the gifts the Three Magi left for them, while the family prepares a meal to celebrate the Epiphany.

From noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, January 4 the Ohio Hispanic Coalition is sponsoring a Dia De Los Reyes celebration at the Westgate Shelter House, 3271 Wicklow Drive in Columbus. The event will include toys and food donated by central Ohio businesses. The Coalition has collected toys for over 400 Latino children in low-income families.

Everyone is welcome to attend. For more information, call the Ohio Hispanic Coalition at (614) 840-9934.
