“Wavelength” opens at Malibleu Gallery Saturday August 16th. Enjoy an opening reception from 4-7pm with live music from the Country Legends.
Roberta Dillon, Gallery Director has gathered together a group of talented artists with work showcasing Malibu and its surrounding beaches. Dillon explained that the theme of the show focuses on the ocean, its waves and the sea from different perspectives.
When asked if there was one consistent trait in the work that had attracted her attention, Dillon replied, “Consistency - A series of work that I can put together.” She looks for work that does not interfere or take away from the surrounding work but will add to the flow of the exhibition.
For this exhibit, Dillon is excited to show a Malibu inspired work by the artist. Harker explains, “Coastal Dreamin’ depicts a playful beach scene inspired by a view from a private beach home in Malibu.” She continues, “The painting includes an abstracted version of the Ferris wheel on the Santa Monica pier, made larger than realistic in proportions as I love to go on that Ferris wheel and see the lights change all the way from Malibu.”
Before Harker moved to Los Angeles, her sister, who had already re-located to San Fernando Valley brought the artist to Malibu while she visited. “As we come from the landlocked heart of Iowa, ocean waters and giant cliffs mesmerized me," explained Harker. “El Matador in Malibu quickly became my favorite beach in LA County and my go to destination for beach outings or to take visitors to show off the beauty of Southern California.”
Harker’s paintings are currently also on exhibit at Christopher Morgan Galleries in Laguna Beach, CA. She recently received some exciting news. “I am super excited that my work has been selected as part of the touring museum exhibit California Dreaming: An International Portrait of Southern California which will take the work of 50 artists to Palazzo dell Provincia di Frosinone in Frosinone, Italy followed by the Oceanside Museum of Art in Oceanside, CA and the Riverside Art Museum in Riverside, CA. http://www.brookeharker.com
Scott Tansey’s photography will also be part of “Wavelength.” Tansey is an established photographer who has traveled on exhibitions all over the world. His work is currently featured in solo exhibit at Leica Gallery. He has been shooting from the same viewpoint to capture parts of the Los Angeles Basin in different lighting conditions.
Tansey has had the chance to join several expeditions and said that photography workshops were instrumental in the advancement of his process. He recounts these early experiences. “The first was a photographic tour down the Green and Colorado River with John Sexton and Phillip Hyde, and the 2nd was a photographic workshop in Alaska with Robert Glen Ketchum. However the best workshop was the Advanced Printing Workshop taught by John Paul Caponigro."
Tansey’s work has been featured in Consumer Reports and in Audubon Magazine, The Argonaut Newspaper etc. He has participated in group shows at bG Gallery (Bergamot Station), Trunk Gallery, Santa Monica Art Studios, Venice Arts and more. http://www.scotttanseyphoto.com/
Mixed-media artist Barbara Kosoff offers three of her works for the show. "I’m excited to participate at Malibleu with such a diverse and eclectic group of artists,” said Kosoff. “This vibrant and colorful gallery with its open air setting situated in 2 bungalows, feels like the perfect blend of art and nature.”
Kosoff is a graphic designer, art director and illustrator. Her interest in making art led her to create mixed-media works on paper. She works by cutting and pasting photographic images found in magazines and pop culture publications and other random sources, and then combines them with drawing and painting with oil bars. Her background as an art director has influenced her in making thought-provoking and whimsical work. For more information about Barbara Kosoff, visit her website at: http://altpick.com/barbarakosoff
