SAT cheating investigations widens

Investigations on cheating on the SAT in New York’s Long Island have widened to include more than 35 students in five schools. In the group also are students said to have taken the ACT on behalf of others. Act is a standardized test popular in the Northeast.  Act test is facing the same security vulnerability as the SAT. This is according to John Byrne, a spokesman for the Nassau County District attorney’s office. Students taking tests for money are normally prosecuted on felony charges. A student that pays for the service faces misdemeanors.  Educational Testing Services is an institution responsible for creating the tests and provides security protocol to the tests.

Tom Ewing, the spokesman for the service says it is unusual for cheating rings for profit. It is likely each year; a student will impersonate another for the test. The year 2011 saw 138 scores cancelled. ETS found out the students had cheated on the test. More needs to be done to stop test cheating.  To simply cancel a suspected student score is not enough measure. Criminally prosecuting a student found cheating among the strong measure that helps fight the vice. The challenge remains on legislation governing instances of cheats. There seems to be confusion on the matter.
