Sasheer Zamata 'SNL' bound as sole black female cast member

Sasheer Zamata is joining "Saturday Night Live," a move made after "SNL" was criticized for lack of diversity in its cast of regulars. This artist who is becoming the sole black female cast member of the veteran late night show describes herself on Twitter as being a "comedian, actress, writer, [and] Beyonce."

Yes, she's funny and she's "SNL" bound, according to CBS News on Jan. 6.

Sasheer Zamata is the first black woman to be cast in the sketch comedy series since Maya Rudolph resigned her post there more than six years ago.

In fact, in total, there have only been four black female regulars on this legendary program during its nearly 40 year run. That's a sad statistic by anyone's standards.

Meanwhile, the addition of Zamata is a keen move by NBC's popular show runners who chose Sasheer after she tested for "SNL" on Dec. 16 during a callback that had a dozen women trying out for that prime gig.

By way of background, Sasheer Zamata is a graduate of the University of Virginia. She earned her degree three years ago, she trained at Upright Citizens Brigade, and she is now embarking on a promising career as she debuts on "Saturday Night Live" on Jan. 18 when Drake is both host and musical guest.

And so, as Sasheer Zamata is "SNL" bound as the sole black female cast member, she'll be a huge addition to the talent already on board and she'll be fascinating to watch as she flexes her improv muscles on national television. Thank you NBC.
