Heading into the final weekend of the annual Florida State Senior Bowling Association's annual championship tournament in Orlando, a number of area participants occupy spots on the leaderboard.
Bill Bickley of Sarasota holds the No. 3 position in handicap singles in the 65-69 age division with a score of 784, and he currently ranks No. 10 in all-events at 1,421. In the same division, Sam Smith of Bradenton is seventh in singles at 759 and fourth in all-events at 1,431.
Glenn Underwood and Ron Smith of Bradenton are listed in the No. 8 spot in handicap doubles at 1,450, and both are listed among the leaders in handicap all-events. Underwood is 10th in the six-game totals of the 70-Over division at 1,426, while Smith is tied for 20th in the 65-69 category at 1,383.
Other area players among the leaders include: Joe Murray of Venice, sixth in 55-59 singles at 734; Daryl Shinn of Sarasota, tenth in 60-64 all-events at 1,441; and Penge Chiropractic of Sarasota, eighth in four-player team event at 2,783.
With three of four weekends completed and the tournament scheduled to end Sunday (Jan. 29), Imperial No. 2 of Babson Park leads the team competition with 2,908, and Mike Meehan and Lou Serridge of Jacksonville are the doubles leaders at 1,510.
Setting the pace in singles are: Tom Servay of Middleburg (70-plus division) 765; Mike Bennigo of Cooper City (65-69) 824; Joe Wallace of Fort Lauderdale (60-64) 820; and Ed Hines of Orange City (55-59) 784.
Holding the scores to beat in all-events are: Bill Hare of Eustis (70-plus) 1,472; Mike Dewees of Lady Lake (65-69) 1,519; Mike Meehan of Jacksonville (60-64) 1,502; and Barry Farley of Eustis (55-59) 1,511.
Hugh Simmons of Tallahassee is the pacesetter in nine-game handicap all-events, which includes team scores, at 2,313.

James Brotherton Benefit at AMF Venice on Sunday
A fund-raising benefit for the family and children of area murder victim James Brotherton will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday (Jan. 29) at AMF Venice Lanes.
Proceeds of the event will be placed in a fund to benefit the family of Brotherton, an off-duty Sarasota County Area Transit bus driver who was shot and killed in the Gulf Gate area.
Participants are requested to give a minimum donation of $20, for which they'll be able to bowl from 2 to 4 p.m., with free use of rental shoes, if needed. In addition, there will be raffles and prize giveaways, and a clown will be on hand to entertain children. Food and drink specials will also be available.
The fund-raiser will be sponsored by AMF Venice, along with Southern Edge Pro Shop and Local Union 1701 representing SCAT drivers. For more information, contact the bowling center at 484-0666.
