Sarasota artist and educator Charles Miano brings a touch of his Southern Atelier to the Lee County Alliance of the Arts next week, beginning with a live studio demonstration at 5:30 p.m. on February 16th. Called Try It, the demo precedes Miano’s 3-day workshop, “Oil Painting From Life: Enhancing Your Visual Perception,” which takes place February 17-19 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day.
Though he has studied realist art privately and academically in the United States and abroad, Miano calls nature his ongoing principal educator. He teaches “a way of artistic truth,” which he says is revealed by fundamental principles of nature that are intrinsic in the visual disciplines of drawing and painting, as evidenced throughout art history.
These principles inform the core curriculum at Miano's Southern Atelier art school in Sarasota. The school is a grass roots educational organization that espouses fine craftsmanship in the visual arts. With a focus on realist drawing and painting as an understood language, Southern Atelier provides access to sound training at an affordable cost to artists.
States internationally-renowned artist Robert Liberace, “Charlie Miano and Southern Atelier has produced one of the best classical art programs in the country. Modeled after the great schools of the past, but mixed with a distinctly modern sensibility, Miano has fashioned a classical school for the 21st century. The Atelier’s dedication to excellence and intensive instruction provides students an ideal environment to fully develop their artistic skills.”
During his Try It class, students will have a chance to meet Miano at a live studio demo.
Miano’s 3-day oil painting series will begin with grisaille painting and practicing brushwork using a system of value. After that, students will proceed to full color using an impressionist palette. Participants will also learn the importance of simplifying color masses to create harmony, and perceiving color variations producing effects of realism and subtlety.
There will be regular demonstrations and critiques throughout the course. The workshop is designed for artists of all experience levels.
“We are so excited to bring a true master artist and educator to the Alliance," says Alliance Education Coordinator Jamie Golob. "This is a great opportunity for local artists.”
Try It is free to Alliance members and only $10 for non-members. The 3-day workshop is $500, or $450 for Alliance members. For more information on these or any of the more than 75 classes offered at the Alliance, please call 239-939-2787 or go to ArtinLee.org.
