Sarai Sierra, 33, a New York mother of two, was found dead on Saturday evening Turkish police told USA Today and they reported it on Feb. 2. She was reported missing two weeks ago and her body was found in the Sarayburnu district of Istanbul with stab wounds to her abdomen. Police identified her by her driver's license on her body.
Sierra was last heard on Jan. 21 which was the day she was supposed to board her flight back home to New York. She was vacationing alone in Istanbul. In Turkey, her disappearance attracted a lot of attention because foreign tourists that disappear do not happen that often. Istanbul police officials had set up a special unit to locate her.
Sarai was a devoted photographer who had wanted to expand her skills in photography. She had taken side trips to Munich and Amsterdam and posted her photos on Instagram before she disappeared.
Sierra last talked to her family on Jan. 21 right before she was supposed to meet a man at Galata Bridge on the Bosporus. She had been chatting with him online for months. According to Turkish media, police were interrogating 11 people that were apprehended in relation to the case.
