Sarai Sierra has been found dead. Sierra, a New York native, decided to take a solo trip to Turkey. The 33-year-old mother of two was found dead in Istanbul nearly two weeks after she was scheduled to return home. On Feb. 2, CBS News reported that Sierra's body was found near the remnants of ancient city walls.
According to the report, nine people were detained and questioned by police in this case. It is unknown if any of those people had any information about Sierra's killing. Police say that she was stabbed to death at another location and that her body was just dumped on the street.
Sarai Sierra was found dead near the Galata Bridge -- a place that she said she was going to visit before leaving heading home. A special police unit had been created to help search for Sierra once she went missing because disappearances and murders of this kind are not common in Turkey.
"While break-ins and petty thievery is common in Istanbul, the vast and crowded city is considered relatively safe in comparison to other major urban centers. The American's death was unlikely to have a significant impact on tourism, an increasingly large component of the Turkish economy," CBS News reported.
Sarai Sierra was identified by her license. She was found dead near the Four Seasons Hotel.
