March 19 marks the release of Cassandra Clare’s “Clockwork Princess,” the final installment of her bestselling Infernal Devices series. That same day Clare will embark on her first bus tour, where YA authors Sarah Rees Brennan and Maureen Johnson will accompany her. Both Brennan and Johnson wrote the upcoming “The Bane Chronicles” with Clare. I had the privilege to interview Brennan and asked her about the “Clockwork Princess” tour.
How different is it to prepare for a bus tour vs. plane?
For me, not at all. I packed to go to Mexico where we all went on writing retreat, then to visit Cassie for two weeks, and then to go on the bus tour. So my trip has involved many planes, and also two months away from Ireland where my washing machine and lots of my clothes live. ('People on the Clockwork Princess tour: Sarah seemed nice... but grubby. So grubby. Are all of the Irish so grubby?')
Cassie, however, who is going on tour from her house and is considerably fancier than me, is bringing many suitcases. This bus affords her the opportunity to delight her fans with a dazzling array of shoes!
Also, many of my friends have prepared 'bail money' for when I 'steal the bus.' Which is very thoughtful of them.
What are you most looking forward to on the 'Clockwork Princess' tour?
All of it! I've known Cassie for ten years and she is always a tiny redheaded bundle of joy (and evil, but I like that about her). I have been sending Maureen strange, intense messages at random intervals (when she least expects it!) about how happy I will be to see her. I'm excited to see Cassie's fans and how they react to the ending of Clockwork Princess! I love hanging out with readers and seeing the energy readers bring to a room: seeing so many people united in imagination is going to be wonderful. Should people wish to talk to me, I promise to love them for being readers, and shower them in presents, and maybe do a little dance.
And obviously, I'm looking forward to stealing the bus.
“The Bane Chronicles” is a collection of ten stories about popular Shadowhunter Chronicles character Magnus Bane. The first story, “What really happened in Peru” comes out April 16. Learn more about “The Bane Chronicles” here. Brennan recently contributed to my feature, “The power of Magnus Bane.” What do fans love this warlock? See what she had to say here.
