Sarah Palin responds to Bristol's engagement to Levi Johnston

July 14, 2010

Barely a week ago, Levi Johnston made headlines when he apologized to Sarah Palin for his negative comments regarding her parenting. In his public apology he stated,

Last year, after Bristol and I broke up, I was unhappy and a little angry. Unfortunately, against my better judgment, I publicly said things about the Palins that were not completely true. I have already privately apologized to Todd and Sarah. Since my statements were public, I owe it to the Palins to publicly apologize."

When Johnston took a stand to atone for his revengeful comments, rumors began surfacing that he and Palin's daughter Bristol may be trying to rekindle their failed relationship. Those rumors became fact when the couple revealed to US Weekly that they became engaged two weeks ago, for the second time.

Palin and Johnston began to repair their relationship in the early Spring, while coming to an agreement over custody plans for their 18-month-old son Tripp. Palin admitted that she was "in shock" when Johnston revealed that he still loved her and wanted to be with her again.

Because of the contentious relationship that developed between the Palin family and Johnston following the initial failed engagement, Sarah Palin was not made aware of the couple's plans to marry at the time the plans were made public. Her daughter stated,

It is intimidating and scary just to think about what her reaction is going to be. Hopefully she will jump on board."

During the couple's separation, Levi Johnston posed for the January 2010 issue of Playgirl  and portrayed Sarah Palin in a negative light. Despite these actions, Palin responded to the news of her daughter's engagement by saying,

Bristol at 19 is now a young adult. We obviously want what's best for our children. Bristol believes in redemption and forgiveness to a degree most of us struggle to put in practice in our daily lives."

I wouldn't want to be a politician and have everyone in my personal life for any amount of money.

Wow....this family is much stronger than I am. I readily admit I'm still struggling to forgive the young man my daughter has chosen to spend her life with. It's a daily struggle to forgive someone that has hurt your child.

Teeheehee! I think this is probably all for ratings (don't they have an upcoming reality TV show?). But I'm a cynic :)
