Usually, Dr. Drew Pinsky spends the vast majority of his time telling other people they have problems. However, he apparently didn't have to do that when discussing former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin. The "Celebrity Rehab" doc is also involved in the MTV show "Teen Mom," said this to Radar Online after meeting Palin's daughter Bristol in New York City on Wednesday:
"Bristol was fantastic. She is clearly a mother. Her parents (Sarah and Todd Palin), have handled it just right.
"Take the Palins' politics out of it -- they have done a remarkable job with Bristol. She is very poised and clear on who she is. She doesn't apologize for who she is.
"Bristol is taking a sub-optimal situation and reaching out to her peers and trying to educate them about teen pregnancy."
Bristol Palin is continuing to be an advocate against teen pregnancy, while her mother continues to mull a possible 2012 Presidential run.

So we are congratulating Sarah Palin now for raising a promiscuous daughter? Why, because Bristol has all kinds of financial support, doesn't dare complain or the media will pick it up, and is able to take off for NYC and go clubbing on Candies' dime? How many 19 year old single moms get any time off for anything? These people have an entitlement complex...Sarah now believes she is worth $100000 for a 20 minutes canned speech full of bumper sticker swipes at Obama, and Bristol thinks she has something positive to say when she made really bad choices. Picture these women as 75 pounds heavier, and no one would even know who they are.
Yes, I agree with Dr. Drew. Obviously it's not an ideal circumstance and no parent wants their 18 year old unwed daughter to get pregnant, but they rolled with it as best they knew how and although they didn't support the fact that she was having premarital sex, they did support their daughter and baby. Susan, I guess you've never learned from any of your mistakes?
Dr. Drew, you are ridiculous. Sarah Palin has such a mess for a family. They are out there now looking for opportunities and $$$. Palins son had to choose the military instead of going to jail, Willow recent aressted and Bristol knocked up? Now Bristol is out there like her mom slithering around, looking for a buck. Chip off the old block. Palin has a messed up family because she doesn't raise her kids. She has taught them nothing. They are all uneducated like her. I don't think you can compare the Palins to average people. Regardless of how well Bristol seems to be handling this situation, if she didn't have resources the situation would be much more challenging. I don't think a mother being absent physically as much as Sarah Palin seems to be would be helpful to an average teen mom, not to mention a special needs baby. It is troubling to me this girl as a role model. I appreciate the idea behind it, but her situation is entirely different than most any other teen mom's would be. When she is travelling to NYC to promote abstinence and is out at night clubs, it glamorizes her life and contridicts the message.
Bristol presents herself as a single mom doing it all on her own.
In reality the baby's father pays child support and is seeking joint custody. From news reports, it has sounded as if Bristol and her family make it very difficult for baby and father to see each other. This does not speak to me of good parenting. Unless there are issues of child safety involved Bristol should be doing all she can to make sure her baby has two active and involved parents.
Dr. Drew is very perceptive. The Palins are real America's First Fsmily. Bristol is a sweetheart.
I hardly think the Palins are a family upon which I would want to model my child-rearing! As other readers have said, one child went into the military rather than go to jail; one became pregnant before finishing high school; one has been arrested for underage drinking; and the other two are too young to find ways to get into trouble on their own (yet). Sarah Palin is off giving speeches and charging $100K a pop to do it; Todd Palin is following Sarah around to ensure he gets into the spotlight as well. As parents - I'd hardly call them "hands-on" or even participatory. As for Dr. Drew...for heaven's sake, he's the host of a "reality" TV series for addicted celebrities! And he's a non-tenured "clinical" professor at a California University. That means he doesn't teach; he just sees patients. So, as for his opinion...to quote Sarah Palin: thanks, but no thanks.

Susan--Those have been my sentiments EXACTLY, from day one of election drama of 2008. Better yet, 75 pounds heavier, 10 years older, and in pantsuits! I believe the Palins, and people who support, them are FAR from supporters of the feminist movement. Women EVERYWHERE around the globe have been working their butts off, cracking the proverbial glass ceilings, and don't get the heroes' welcome that these women have. @clw, I have never had a drink or a cigarette, had no premarital sex, graduated from one college, got married, raised two honor students who never got into trouble, and am now a proud grandmother. Not sure what I've learned except that I tried to follow the Golden Rule and abide by all of the 10 Commandments. I was raised by a dad who drank, worked in a factory until the day he died, and a mom who went to work when I was sixteen, which meant I did a lot of household chores as well as looked after five siblings. I also had a job from 15 on, so I was a little busy to get into trouble of any kind.
My problem with the Palins is that Sarah is never home, yet uses her status as mother of five as some kind of stellar achievement. The reward comes later, when your children are educated, secure, and out on their own. Maybe one can survive in Alaska without a college degree, but not in Michigan. The reward comes when you have put in the time teaching your kids to read and be good people.
I read a comment that Sarah Palin said she is working on" making this a world where handicap are acceptable", I would like to know how she is approaching this-my daughter became mentally ill at 23, she lost all her friends, precription medication increased her breast from a C cup to a HHH (no bra will fit) another med made her teeth loosen and fall out, a hospital talked me into putting her in a specialized IMD-she was there two weeks and molested 3 times--which made her worse--she is not strong enough to take the stand in court or we would have a million dollar case. I do not have the money for her teeth or breast reduction, and we are not trusting county screw up Dr.'s any longer. If you are a millionaire there is privacy and help, middle class has a very slim chance. No one wants my daughter around, and people think I must be mentally ill because she is -atleast I was able to make a report in the mental health court before a judge and my attorney says this happens so often.
Like I said before, some of you people are pathetic. Palin is not an overweight porker because she is disciplined, unlike McCaskill, McCkulsky, Clinton, She runs daily if she can. Her work ethic is stunning. To list her accomplishments in the last 9 months alone is staggering, including making 12 million with the responsibility of a down syndrome child. She's on the PTA, a Mayor, a Governor, a VP candidate, all while raising a family, not after their gone. Kudos to Sarah Palin.

What is stunning is that she has people convinced she is an admirable person when she is all about Sarah. I was on the PTA, worked when my kids were young, and attended school board meetings. Yes, she was briefly a governor...of a state with a very part time legislature, leaving her plenty of time to run around promoting snow machines and whatever. It seems to me that she was more interested in politics than her kids even then.

Now she's doing that, sonetimes with her kids, and she's getting blasted for not staying home. I thought you libs, Mikey, liked career women. Since she resigned and wrote her book in 2 months and made 7 mil, Todd was able to quit his job, so he and the daughters are probably helping wipe noses, butts, ears, toes or whatever. Sarah said Todd was transporting Willow 14 miles to school, so that,s a check, They probably all pitch in on homework, Sarah's usually home a week then giving speeches for 4 or 5 days, Her summer schedule doesn't seem quite so demanding, travel wise, as she,ll be doing her discover Alaska show. Then you'll be complaining about her shooting hairy little anumals and pulling slimy fish from Bristol Bay, She said they eat therefore they hunt. I'm not sure what extra care Trig needs at this age, but i'm sure its getting covered.

I also wonder about the whole "work ethic" thing. Is it ethical to campaign for an elected position, win it, and then dump it? Is it ethical to constantly decry the media and yet use it to spread rumors and lies? Is it ethical to tell people what you should or should not do while pregnant yet ignore all common sense and fly while in labor with a high risk pregnancy? Is it ethical to portray oneself as "just a hockey mom" and yet be so busy travelling and doing other things that someone else is raising your children? (Sorry, dragging one kid at a time to various high profile functions is hardly the same thing as good parenting.)
