According to Sarah Palin, when she said "drill, baby, drill!" throughout the 2008 presidential campaign what she really meant was "drill onshore, baby, drill onshore." On Twitter, Palin claimed that she was actually against offshore drilling and implied the Gulf oil spill disaster may have been prevented under her watch. Palin stated:
"Extreme Greenies: See now why we push "drill, baby, drill" of known reserves and promising finds in safe onshore places like ANWR? Now do you get?"
Palin's tweet reflects what is a consistent argument now being made by conservatives. Conservatives claim they were never for this kind of offshore drilling, but instead favored drilling closer to shore or inland. They claim that if the United States would not have needed to drill offshore if we were able to drill at all onshore sites.
There are a number of problems with Palin's claim. First and foremost, Palin actually did favor the type of offshore drilling which caused the Gulf oil spill disaster. Last month when President Obama announced an expansion of offshore drilling Palin actually criticized him for not opening up more of the ocean to offshore drilling. Palin wrote, "while Interior Department bureaucrats continue to hold up actual offshore drilling from taking place, Russia is moving full steam ahead on Arctic drilling, and China, Russia, and Venezuela are buying leases off the coast of Cuba." There is also no evidence that Palin only wanted to drill onshore when she said "drill, baby, drill" throughout the 2008 campaign. On the contrary, most believe that Palin meant to drill everywhere and anywhere that oil could be found.
More generally, environmentalists also take issue with claims that onshore or closer offshore drilling is somehow safer. While Palin was Governor of Alaska, BP operated an onshore pipeline which leaked a significant amount of oil on Alaska's North Slope. The largest oil spill ever in the Gulf of Mexico is actually not the current spill, but instead a 1979 oil spill off the coast of Mexico. That leak went on for 290 days despite being only 160 feet beneath the ocean's surface. The oil companies tried the same kind operations to stop the leak with the same kind of success.

And if she was against offshore drilling then where is the evidence she made an effort against it. Their is no such evidence.

We can blame everyone, but how is that saving our environment? I am but only one person out here volunteering my time to help the wildlife. Their suffering is beyond what Sarah Palin can even imagine, and her cavalier attitude about off shore drilling and her denials are examples of her lack of sound judgment. I haven't seen Palin her rolling up her sleeves to help clean up our beaches, to wipe oil off of unborn sea turtle eggs, to watch the suffering of a young brown pelican that can no longer breathe because his lungs are full of oil. I don't see Sarah Palin out her doing anything except trying to diss anyone because she obviously failed Geography 1 in high school. Disgusting!
