The Huffington Post is engaging in a little bit of exaggeration when it suggests that the Obamacare defunding fight is “Ted Cruz vs. the Universe.” While Cruz may have knives out for him being wielded by everyone from Charles Krauthammer to Harry Reid, he has one extremely powerful person in his corner: Sarah Palin.
Palin, who recently famously said that it was time to “bomb” Obamacare instead of Syria, wrote in a September 21, 2013 oped in Big Government that Ted Cruz is “over the target.” And if Cruz is like a B 1 bomber getting ready to unleash hell on Obamacare and all of its supporters, Palin is an F 16 flying top cover. Her fire is not only aimed at Democrats who, ignoring evidence of the coming train wreck, want Obamacare to continue, but squishy Republicans who think that Cruz is not being well advised to fight on the ground he has chosen.
“But the permanent political class is handwringing and howling that if there’s a government shutdown the media will blame Republicans for it. Here’s a little newsflash, GOP establishment: Whenever anything bad happens, the media blames Republicans for it. That’s not an excuse to roll over and play dead. It’s a call to follow the advice I give my daughters: Woman up, stand your ground, and fight like a girl!”
Palin ends with a not so veiled threat.
“Oh, and a little reminder to Republican senators up for re-election in 2014: Moose season ends soon, allowing more time on one’s hands. So, we’ll be watching your votes very carefully this week.”
The fight over Obamacare funding is being waged in the shadow of the 2014 elections. Those who must vote on it may do well to consider that.
