Sarah Hyland of "Modern Family" fame was groped by a fan and ran crying from the assault outside an event to promote the hit ABC show in Sydney, Australia on Feb. 20, according to the star's claims to police. The actress was reportedly visibly upset as she pushed the man away after he grabbed or attempted to grab her breasts during a photo-op.
The 23-year-old actress commented matter-of-factly via social media shortly after the disturbing incident unfolded Thursday evening. Hyland apologized to fans waiting to meet her at the Qantas Airlines event at Sebel Pier One, tweeting, "Sorry to all the fans outside the #qantas event that I didn't get to say hi to, but I had to leave due to an inappropriate touch of a fan."
(Hyland's beau, Matt Prokop, had a few, shall we say, more choice words on the matter. "To the a--hole who assaulted Sarah tonight, I hope to God you don't see next week. All Sarah wanted to do was say hi to the girls waiting outside," Prokop wrote on Twitter Thursday. This led to an extended Twitter rant and discussion among Prokop and his followers concerning whether men in Australia or the US are the more obnoxious/dangerous/gross set. Thoughts, anyone?)
Sarah Hyland Groped: 'Modern Family' and 'Vampire Academy' Starlet Claims Assault by Aussie Fan
The man with the "inappropriate touch" had reportedly just taken a photo with the "Modern Family" actress when she says he assaulted her. An unidentified 29-year-old man of thus-far unknown nationality was arrested in the alleged groping incident.
Because this was an official promotional event, there was a red carpet and plenty of photographers on site. Hyland was decked out in a white party dress, an adorable updo and large hoop earrings for the party, which was also attended by her fellow "Modern Family" cast mates. (The whole gang is in Australia to both film and promote the annual vacation episode of the popular sitcom.)
