Sarah Burke's family to attend 2014 Winter Olympics

According to Eddie Pells of the Associated Press on Monday, the family of the late Canadian freestyle skiing icon Sarah Burke of Barrie, Ontario will attend the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.

Burke's family members who will be in Russia are her husband Rory, and her parents.

Burke, who specialized in the women's halfpipe skiing competition, died on January 19, 2012 after a training accident in Utah. She was a four-time X Games gold medalist and a serious Olympic medal contender next month. What stood Burke apart from her competitors was her technical excellence in her jumps. She was the first to land a 720 degree jump, 900 degree jump and 1080 degree jump.

Burke was also instrumental in persuading the International Olympic Committee to give full Olympic status to the sports of women's halfpipe skiing and women's slopestyle skiing.

Burke will be missed significantly by freestyle skiers and snowboarders next month. Thumbs up to many competitors at the Winter X Games on the weekend who remembered Burke in various ways.
