Tucked away in the eastern stretch of Main Street in Manayunk lies Sapphire, a cocktail lounge with modern personality. Catering to those of us interested in a unique dining and drinking experience, the owners of Sapphire are always up for making changes to the food menu and specialty cocktail list, most recently adding the "Crab-a-Cado," consisting of two avocado halves packed with Sapphire's signature jumbo lump crab ceviche.
Like many establishments, the atmosphere in Sapphire varies depending on the day of the week. During most days the restaurant is quiet and comfortable, allowing for pleasant banter amongst friends or lovers over enticing meals and expertly-crafted drinks. The evenings can get particularly busy, especially on the nights when they have a DJ playing dance music. This does not typically make for an unpleasant experience, however, as both Sapphire's bar and dining areas are laid out in such a way that there is plenty of seating and personal space available. And for those fantastic days during the warmer months of the year, the appeal of Sapphire's outdoor dining options is almost too good to pass up.
The beer selection at Sapphire is adequate — certainly not the largest list, but of course that's not the reason to visit. Sapphire shines in its collection of spirits, the ammunition for its large variety of speciality cocktails and classic concoctions. Their Martnis are simply superb, and for those undecided folks, the staff suggestions are almost always spot-on.
Sapphire is a modern take on the cocktail lounge, with fair prices and a great selection of both food and beverages. As a location that's off the well-worn strip of Main Street it's easy to miss, but once found, offers something other than the typical Manayunk bar.
