Travelers know about the Great Wall, the Terra Cotta Warriors, and pandas but few people realize that China has an island in the sun. Hainan Island is located in the South China Sea about an hour south of Hong Kong by air. The weather is warm most of the year and touted as “China’s Hawaii.” The south shore of Sanya is lined with beaches and hotels.
While there are budget accommodations there are also a myriad of high-end luxury resort hotels. As one might expect in a fun-in-the-sun location there are jet skis and all the other beach activities found in any beach resort area worldwide.
Visitors can visit Monkey Island, Li and Maio Ethnic Village, and enjoy other touristic day trips with more venues in the process of being built. The island’s infrastructure includes excellent roads, bridges and tunnels plus the amount of building going on is impressive. The trendy area to stay was – and still is -Yalong Bay, a beautifully landscaped area lined with high-end resorts like the MGM Grand. Now, a new area is being developed to the east in Haitang Bay with resorts like the InterContinental and Four Seasons. Nearby will be massive Duty Free Shops.
It is one of the few places where one can see the Chinese kicking back and enjoying the beach. Most of the international tourists are from Russia but more and more Europeans are discovering China’s island in the sun.
