Santos Laguna managed to take a 3-2 win over Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente at the Corona TSM Stadium in week 7 action of the Clausura 2014 of La Liga MX. The game was full of goals, with the five official goals, three off-side hits from Oribe Peralta, and several that each of the keepers were able to prevent from entering the net, kept the score an entertaining 3-2.
Tijuana is still winless this season in away games. In fact, the dogs have been unsuccessful in winning a league away game since Jan. 20, 2013. They’ve managed a few draws, but no wins. This is something that Coach Cesar Farias will have to make improvements on if they want to continue climbing in the league table and aspire to the playoffs.
The game was intense form the start with both teams racking up goals in both halves. The first goal came early with a doubtful penalty shot. Xolos defender Juan Carlos Nuñez was on the penalty line when a shot hit his hand. From various angles the shot shows Nuñez hitting the ball with his hand, but it is hard to see if it was inside the penalty area. Juan Pablo Rodriguez took charge of the ball and fired to beat Cirilo Saucedo for the 1-0.
Santos doubled their lead in the 20th minute with a well-executed goal begun by Carlos Darwin Quintero. The Ecuadorian ran in and found the ball that Saucedo had just punched away. The rebound landed in front of Mauro Cejas who hammered it into the net for the 2-0.
Despite the amount of goals down, Xolos did not give in. The Aztec dogs applied pressure and four minutes later they were breaking the net. Fidel Martinez took the ball into the area and shot, but could not put the ball in. However, Argentine Cristian Pellerano ran in and fired past Oswaldo Sanchez for the 2-1. The game remained active with back-and-forth action between the two squads until half time.
Santos began the second half applying pressure. The “Mexican hoops” were able to get past the rojinegros defense when Oribe Peralta filtered a ball to Quintero. The “scientifico del gol” entered the area unopposed and executed Saucedo for the 3-1. Minutes later Quintero could have increased the lead, but Saucedo was able to stop the ball from entering his net.
Tijuana was not going down easy and ten minutes later Xolos broke the net once more. Martinez received a long pass and drove it into the area. Alone in the area, with Sanchez off his line Martinez shot to the keeper’s left putting the ball into the net for final the 3-2.
The action was intense with nothing really happening in the midfield, but on the ends of the pitch. After 90 minutes, Pedro Caixinha’s team takes a hard fought victory 3-2.
