According to a Feb. 9 report from the New York Post, Cris “Cyborg” Santos has requested to be released from her UFC contract, making a fight against UFC champ Ronda Rousey quite unlikely to happen.
“Right now we’re actually waiting for UFC to release her,” Santos' manager Tito Ortiz said on Inside MMA. “We asked for them to release her. [UFC president] Dana [White] actually talked to me yesterday. They offered. I went to ‘Cyborg’ and she said she didn’t want to do it. And we just asked for a release.”
Rousey insists that Santos cuts to 135 pounds if she wants the fight. Santos, who walks around well over 160 pounds, agreed to fight at 140 pounds, but not 135.
Rousey refuses to fight at 140 pounds, so the fight appears unlikely for the time being.
“For a man it’s different, because we have a lot more water weight to take off,” Ortiz said. “For Cris ‘Cyborg’ to get down to that weight, she’s gonna be 3 to 4 percent body fat. I talked to her. She said she wants to start a family later on. She wants to have kids.”
Rousey has a fight set for Feb. 23 against Liz Carmouche, which is slated for UFC 157 in Anaheim, Calif. There is a long line of bantamweights waiting for a shot at Rousey, and the list includes Miesha Tate, Sara McMann, Shayna Baszler and others.
That said, Rousey feels like "Cyborg" needs the fight more than she does.
“Everyone wants to see this fight,” Ortiz said. “It’s blowing up on Twitter. ... Make it at a 140-pound weight class.”
