It looked like Cruz Azul would win their first game of the Apertura 2014 when luck showed its hand in the second half to give Club Santos Laguna the 1-1 draw. La maquina cementera took an early lead at the TSM Corona Stadium but could not hold on to the lead against a persistent Lagunero side that managed to save their performance in week 2 action of La Liga MX.
From the start the “Mexican hoops” went all out against Jose de Jesus Corona’s net. Colombian Carlos Darwin Quintero was a constant nightmare for the Mexican national team keeper. However, Corona was able to keep the “goal scientist” from marking a difference on the scoreboard.
It was the cementeros who surprised in the 13th minute when Argentine Mauro Formica moved between two defenders to beat out Oswaldo Sanchez. Cruz Azul took the 1-0 lead. The game continued to be fast paced, but it would go into the break with the Mexico City squad leading.
Santos did not want to lose their home opener and in the 69th minute la comarca would get on the board. Quintero, who continued to work on getting into the area, centered to Andres Renteria who headed the ball. The Colombian would find the near post to beat out Corona for final the 1-1.
Santos continued to apply pressure on the visiting squad but to no avail. Both coaches were forced to make injury substitutions. Santos Coach Pedro Caixinha was forced to pull Ribair Rodriguez off the pitch in the 29th minute. Luis Fernando Tena removed Pablo Barrera due to injury as well.
Cruz Azul earn their first point of the season and will host Veracruz at the Azul Stadium in week 3. Santos takes temporary possession of the top spot in the league with Atlas. They will travel north to take on Monterrey.
