Club Santos Laguna has yet to win a game during the Clausura 2014. On Friday, Santos hosted Puebla FC at the TSM Corona Stadium in week 3 action of La Liga MX. After 90 minutes the game ended with a 0-0, and the fans jeering the team.
This is the second game that the “Mexican hoops” play on their home turf and have not been able to win. So far they have drawn twice with a loss last week at the Azul Stadium in Mexico City. This is one of the worst starts for Santos since the Clausura 2009 where they went six games before winning their first encounter.
As for Puebla, the camoteros have not been able to win a match in Torreon since the winter 1999 season. In the last 14 years since that victory Puebla has garnered a 9 loss and now 4 draw record. This is their third consecutive draw in the Clausura 2014. It is the sixth league game that La Franja has without a win in La Liga MX. Their last victory was a 2-0 over Atlas FC on Oct. 20, 2013.
The game began with Santos in control of the pitch during the first half, but Puebla generated the more dangerous plays. U.S. international DaMarcus Beasley was constant on the attack for the camoteros. However, it was Uruguayan Carlos Sanchez who was closest to putting the ball in the net.
Sanchez had the first shot in the first minutes of play. His second shot was closer after beating goalkeeper Oswaldo Sanchez but hit the post. For the home side, Oribe Peralta and Javier “chuletita” Orozco had control of the ball in the final run, but came up short. Neither player inconvenienced goalkeeper Jorge Villalpando. The game went to break scoreless.
Santos began the second half applying pressure. In the first minute a counterstrike that gave Orozco a shot hit the crossbar. Colombian Carlos Darwin Quintero was there to take the rebound but sent the ball inches too high to miss the opportunity.
A few minutes later Oswaldo Sanchez participated in a dangerous play. Jesus Chavez took a shot that went over all players in the penalty area. Sanchez was attentive to the play and tapped the ball over the crossbar to save his net.
The last clear opportunity came in the 66th with Orozco running side by side with the defense but was blocked and went to a corner kick. The game became frustrating for the home side as Puebla looked to end the game controlling the ball in the final minutes of play. The fans sent the home side off with boos. Santos has been showing a lackluster performance this season, something unexpected from the Laguneros.
Santos travels to Queretaro to take on the Gallos Blancos at La Corregidora in week 4. Puebla will host Chiapas FC at the Cuauhtémoc Stadium.
