Club Santos Laguna gave Monarcas Morelia their second loss in a row Friday during week 12 action of La Liga MX. The “Mexican hoops” defeated Morelia 3-1 at the TSM Corona stadium to move them into the third position on the league table.
Morelia scored first and looked like they would be a serious candidate for the victory. Jose Cardenas opened scoring in the 6th minute of play. However, four minutes later Santos recovered with a midfield shot from Rodolfo Salinas to close the gap to 1-1. The goal flew past goalkeeper Federico Vilar and took the wind out of the sails of the visiting team.
The game became intense as Morelia moved forward to attack. The team’s boldness left spaces open for the Santos midfielders to exploit and counter. It was a matter of time before the home side would increase the lead. Colombian Darwin Quintero increased the lead in the 29th minute with a header. Five minutes later Oribe Peralta broke the net for the final 3-1.
The rhythm of the game changed once Mauro Cejas was sent off. With the big enough lead, Pedro Caixinha decided to order a defensive game that kept the ball on his team’s side of the field. Santos controlled the game and held on to win 3-1. The victory moves them into third place for now. There are three teams that could displace Santos on goal differential at the end of the week.
Santos will travel to Mexico City to take on the struggling Pumas UNAM. Morelia will host the red hot “La Fiera” Leon FC.
Queretaro held back again
The Gallos Blancos of Queretaro let go of valuable points for the second week in a row after six weeks of positive play in La Liga MX. Queretaro and Tigres UANL drew 2-2 at La Corregidora stadium to kick off week 12.
Diego de la Torre and Colombian Wilberto Cosme put Queretaro up 2-0. However, Tigres made a comeback in the 70th minute as Lucas Lobos put the ball in the net. Carlos Salcido scored in the 76th to end the game 2-2.
Queretaro travels to Tijuana for week 13, Tigres will host Toluca FC.
