Club Santos Laguna earned a valuable point in Venezuela to keep control of Group 8 in Copa Libertadores action. Santos drew 1-1 against Deportivo Anzoátegui. The Mexican hoops control their group winning their first two games. This result gives them 7 points putting them at the top of the group.
Santos coach Pedro Caixinha put his best players on the pitch as they moved to keep at the top of their group. The laguneros gained momentum, but it was not until the 62nd minute that they were able to break the net. A combination between Colombian Darwin Quintero and Javier “chuletita” Orozco to center to Oribe Peralta put Santos on the board with the 1-0.
The goal did not affect the home side as they went after Santos to get the equalizer. Manuel Arteaga, who came on as a substitute made the difference in the 75th minute. Santos goalkeeper Oswaldo Sanchez had stopped a shot, but did not clear the ball far enough away. Arteaga ran in and hammered the ball past the keeper to close the gap 1-1.
Emelec downs Mexican champion
Leon FC played well in Ecuador generating more shots on goal against Emelec. However, it is not about generating plays, but about putting the ball in the net. La Fiera was not able to do this, and it cost them a 2-1 loss at the George Capwell Stadium, Ecuador.
Luis Escalada caused the damage for the panzas verdes. He came on in the first minute after starter Fernando Gimenez had to be taken off the pitch due to injury. Escalada put the ball in the net in the 15th minute of play with a powerful shot that beat keeper William Yarbrough.
The Mexican squad would close the gap a few minutes later with a brilliant play from Carlos “Gulit” Peña. The Mexican “phenom” received a ball as he entered the goal area. He pushed through the defense and beat the keeper to fire into the net for the 1-1.
But it was not meant to be for Leon. Escalada would take advantage of a defensive error in the 61st minute. The ball landed in front of Escalada who was face to face with Yarbrough. At point blank he fired to give the home side the 2-1 victory.
