Club Santos Laguna took an agonic 1-0 victory over Club America on Friday at the Corona TSM Modelo stadium to win a game after three weeks without a victory. The Laguneros ended America’s three game undefeated run in the Clausura 2013 of La Liga MX in week 8.
“It cost us blood, sweat and tears,” Santos Coach Pedro Caixinha told the press after the game. “It’s the truth. That’s how it is when you have players that give their all for one-another, the institution, the club. You can only be satisfied with what you see on the field. That’s our job.”
Colombian Darwin Quintero scored the only goal of the game and Juan Carlos Rodriguez missed a penalty shot in the second half.
Santos reached 12 points in league play and catapulted to the sixth position on the league table. America remains with 16 points in second place with Atlas and Tijuana, both with 13 points, still to play.
America will host Cruz Azul in week 9; Santos visits Jaguares de Chiapas FC in their next match.
Monarcas ends Pachuca’s winning streak
Monarcas Morelia defeated Pachuca 3-2 at the Morelos stadium Friday. Argentine Carlos Bustos made his debut at the helm of Monarcas and defeated a Tuzos team that had won their last three games.
Ecuadorian Jefferson Montero scored for Morelia in the seventh minute. Chilean Hector Mancilla had a double for the Monarchy. Abraham Carreño and Angel Reyna scored for Pachuca.
From the start the visiting squad attacked in search of their fourth victory in a row with both Carreño and Reyna leading the charge. However, it was Morelia who would break the net in their first opportunity.
Montero received a pass from Colombian Aldo Leao in the area. The ball moved past the defense and Montero fired across to break the net for the 1-0. Morelia began to control the game making more runs from the wings.
Tuzos surprised Monarcas in the 29th with a combination between Carreño and Reyna to close the gap. Reyna centered to Carreño who was unmarked in the area and hammered the ball to make the game 1-1.
A few minutes later Mancilla put the home side ahead once more. On a clearance from goalkeeper Federico Vilar that reached the other side of the field, defender Fernando Navarro took Joao Rojas down in the area. Mancilla converted from the penalty spot to put Monarcas ahead 2-1.
Monarcas increased the lead with 20 minutes left in the game. Mancilla again broke the net after receiving a center from Rojas. Morelia was leading 3-1 in Bustos’ debut.
The final goal of the game came in the 80th minute of play. Reyna took a shot from outside the area. Vilar was not in the right position and could not reach the ball on time. Tuzos tried to remount, but time ran out and the game ended 3-2.
Morelia reaches 11 points and moves into 8th place on the league table. They will travel to Monterrey to face Tigres UANL in week 9. Pachuca remains in 5th place. The Tuzos will host San Luis FC for their next league game.
