Chivas de Guadalajara showed great promise on the pitch of the TSM Corona stadium to start off their Clausura 2014 adventure. Chivas drew 1-1 with Club Santos Laguna as La Liga MX resumes with the Guadalajara-based team trying to earn points as they are dangerously lingering in the relegation bracket.

Omar Bravo returned to Chivas for his fourth stint with the club. In the second minute of play Bravo scored his 109th goal with the Rebaño Sagrado as he played in his official 300th league game with Chivas.

Carlos Fierro took the ball down the line and passed to Aldo DeNigris who hit it with the point of his toes to pass to Rafael Marquez-Lugo who saw Bravo open. Bravo took the ball and fired to goalkeeper Oswaldo Sanchez’ right for the 1-0.

Santos was the home side and obligated to take control of the game. Within 20 minutes the laguneros were in control of the ball but had no luck getting on the board. Oribe Peralta was active with several shots on goal. The best opportunity Santos had was in the 43rd minute when Javier “chuletita” Orozco recovered a rebound but sent it straight to the keeper who managed to clear it. Despite playing better on the pitch, Santos went into the break losing 1-0.

Santos applied more pressure from the start of the second half. Pedro Caixinha’s squad wanted to at least draw the game and then take the lead. Jose Abella Fanjul took a ball down the line and cleared his marker to center to Colombian Carlos Darwin Quintero. However, it was Israel Castro who reached the ball first. Castro sent the ball into his own net to close the gap for the home side 1-1.

Chivas reacted quickly when Bravo took the ball into the area and shot but hit the post. Fierro recovered the rebound but sent the ball sailing over the crossbar to waste the opportunity.

When Santos played better a foul by defender Oswaldo Alanis earned him a second yellow booking that turned red. This left Santos with a man down in the 66th minute of play. The advantage should have given Chivas the boost they needed to get the go-ahead goal. However, Jose Luis Real did not take the chances he could have to seal the game allowing Santos keep the draw. Chivas have not beaten Santos in Torreon since the Clausura 2007.

For week 2 Santos will travel to Mexico City to take on Cruz Azul, Chivas will host Chiapas FC at the Omnilife Stadium in Guadalajara.
