Santorum increases lead over Romney, according to latest Gallup poll

Overnight, Gallup released its latest daily poll numbers, and Rick Santorum is farther ahead of Mitt Romney than he has ever been before. Newt Ginrich and Ron Paul remain far behind.

Gallup’s Daily tracking rolling average gives the four GOP presidential nominees the following numbers:

Rick Santorum: 36%

Mitt Romney: 26%

Newt Gingrich: 13%

Ron Paul: 11%

The Gallup poll numbers are from the February 15-19, 2012 daily tracking poll.

It was just last week that Santorum moved to within two points of Romney when Romney had 32% to Santorum’s 30%.  Just a week later, the numbers are incredibly different while showing much support coming to Santorum and much support evaporating from Romney.

Santorum’s surge began when he won the two primaries and caucus – in Minnesota, Missouri, and Colorado – in early February.  The day before the trifecta, three-contest win, it was Romney with 37% to Santorum’s 16%.  The incredible change in Republican voters’ support has only taken a couple of weeks.

Not to forget Newt Gingrich in all of this, Gingrich’s 13% at present ties his lowest numbers since December 1, 2011 when Gallup began its daily tracking of the four GOP candidates.  Gingrich was in first place - one point ahead of Romney - just three weeks ago at the end of January 2012.

In spite of the Santorum Gallup Daily polling victory revealed, however, most persons polled still feel that Romney is the most electable candidate to beat President Barack Obama at this point in time.  54% of those polled believe Romney is the most electable GOP candidate while only 29% believe Santorum can defeat Obama in November.
