While the Team USA's roster in Sochi this February won't be headlined by any members of the New Jersey Devils, it's likely that two prospects in the Devils system will be serving their country at the 2014 World Junior Championship later this week in Sweden.
The final roster won't be decided until prior to the first game between the U.S. and Czech Republic on Dec. 26, but according to Chris Peter's of United States of Hockey, Steve Santini and Stefan Matteau will be in the lineup.
With just three players returning from the 2013 gold medal roster, the doors have opened up for other American hockey players as they look to become the first U.S. team to earn back-to-back gold at the WJC.
Matteau, snubbed from last year's roster at the World Juniors has spent the season in the American Hockey League, where he has put up six goals and seven assists with the Albany Devils through 25 games. While he isn't going to provide top-minutes for the U.S, Matteau can contribute and be effective on both ends of the ice, playing on the bottom six.
Joining Matteau at the International tournament is Devil's defensive prospect, Steve Santini. Drafted in 2013 by the Devils, Boston College defenseman Santini is slotted to play alongside New York Ranger's prospect, Brady Skjei. Prior to being loaned to Team USA, Santini collected two goals and four assists in his first 13 games playing under Boston College's Jerry York. Santini leads the Eagles with 36 penalty minutes.
All Team USA games will be aired live from Sweden on NHL Network in the U.S. and can also be streamed live on NHL.com.
