Museums are free this Saturday! Where? Seven museums in the Santa Ynez Valley will be open to the public Saturday, March 2nd. Some of the museums have planned special events for Saturday and other days during museum week,which runs through next Saturday.

Theses seven museums located in the Santa Ynez Valley will have FREE admission for all ages for the entire day.

BUELLTON: Buellton Historical Society History Room, 376 Avenue of Flags; www.buellton.org Open: 7:00 am-10:00 pm (every day) Phone: 805-688-7829

Located in Andersen’s Pea Soup Restaruant, the museum provides a look at what it was like to travel on Highwya 101 in the early years of car travel.

LOS ALAMOS: Los Alamos Valley Historical Display & Depot, 515 Bell St. (Hwy 135) www.losalamosvalley.org Open: 10:00 am-4:00 pm (for Museum Day) Phone: 805-344-3315

Los Alamos was founded in 1876 during the country’s 100th anniversary. The museum is located in what use to be the town’s railroad depot.

The Wilding is one of the best art museums in the state which exhibits art of the American wilderness. Free craft activities for children will be available on Saturday.

SANTA YNEZ: Santa Ynez Valley Historical Museum & Carriage House, 3596 Sagunto; www.santaynezmuseum.org Open: 10:00 am-4:00 pm (for Museum Day) Phone: 805-688-7889

The museum provides a look at the valley from the days fo the Chumash Indians to modern ranching days. One of the largest collections of American-made horse drawn carriage can also be found at the museum. Stop by and have some fresh popped popcorn from a 1906 Cretor Popcorn wagon.

SOLVANG: Elverhoj Museum of History & Art, 1624 Elverhoy Way; www.elverhoj.org Open: 10:00 am-5:00 pm (for Museum Day) Phone: 805-686-1211

The Elverhoj is located in what use to be the home of a well known resident of the town. Solvang is America’s “Little Denmark” and the museum has a remarkable collection of art, crafts and items the early Danish-Americans used when the settled the area. An art gallery adds to the museum’s charm.

This museum is dedicated to H.C. Anderson, the Danish writer who gave us The Ugly Duckling, The Little Mermaid and The Emperor’s New Clothes,. Located in the second story garret above the The Book Loft, a well stock books story, you will find copies of Anderson’s works, sketch and other memorabilia of this writer of children’s stories.

The 19th of California’s 21 missions, Mission Santa Ines had been restored and contains a large collection of paintings, statues, manuscripts and artifacts that were made and used in the mission in the 1800s.

Getting there. From Los Angeles take Highway 101 to Santa Barbara. In Santa Barbara take Highway 154 over San Marcos Pass to the Santa Ynez Valley. Once in the valley you can stay on the 154 to Los Olivos or turn left on Highway 246 to Santa Ynez, Solvang and Buellton.

From the north take Highway 101. The first town you come to will be Los Alamos. Continue south and exit left on the 154 to Los Olivos. From here you can the visit Solvang, Santa Ynez or Buellton.
