The debate with the Fox Republican propaganda channel continues. This time it is about whether or not Santa is white. Granted, a lot of our Christmas trappings come from northern Europe and so a popular version of St Nicholas is the picture of a white guy because of our Nordic cultural connection.
However, St Nicholas, the real Santa, was a Mediterranean man. Situated between the darker skinned central and southern African people and the lighter skinned Nordic people, the skin and hair color of people from the Mediterranean, southern Europe and north Africa, tends to be somewhere in the middle between Nordic and central to southern African.
The real Santa was born during the third century along the south-west coast of what is now Turkey. It was populated by Greek speaking people at that time. The National Geographic Society connects most people in the Mediterranean area with a common genetic code, which thus differentiates them from their cousins with lighter skin and hair color in colder parts of Europe.
Nicholas is a very Greek name and he was known for his incredible generosity and faith in ancient times. The legends and fictitious stories which overshadow the real man have grown out of the life of a bishop of the eastern Christian faith who, though he inherited a large fortune, gave it all away in his lifetime.
Race is a wonderful thing. Nobody should ever be ashamed of their race, nor so proud as to exclude the beauty that exists in all races. Perhaps rather than claim this man as white, which is another historical fiction, we ought to claim him as someone who came from the middle shades of race and therefore represents all races.
