Santa Cruz restaurant news: The Picnic Basket and The Penny Ice Creamery

Here are a couple pieces of news related to Santa Cruz ice cream shop The Penny Ice Creamery and restaurant The Picnic Basket, both owned and operated by locals Kendra Baker and Zach Davis.

First, news on The Penny: In case you hadn’t heard, last November the popular ice cream venue opened a kiosk on Pacific Avenue. It’s right in front of Bookshop Santa Cruz, so it’s the perfect post-book-shopping treat. Up until a week ago, it was open from 11am-11pm daily, but for the winter season those hours are only effective on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. From Sun-Wed, The Penny Kiosk is now closing at 9pm (when the weather warms up, the hours will extend once again).

The kiosk has a set menu with 5 specific flavors, plus one seasonal sorbet and one seasonal ice cream for a total of 7 choices. The always-available five are Verve Coffee with Chocolate Almond Praline, Bitter Caramel, Fresh Mint, Tahitian Vanilla Bean (these four are ice cream) plus Dark Chocolate Sorbet. Other treats include The Parisian, which is an ice cream bon bon served with an espresso (and is only available at the kiosk – not at The Penny’s main Cedar Street location), and the Ginger Float. This drink was originally only available at the kiosk, but due to its popularity it’s been added to the Cedar menu. The Ginger Float’s main ingredient is organic Golden Ginger. Created by Santa Cruz bartender Hans Losee and his company Artisan Elixirs, Golden Ginger is a beverage with organic Hawaiian ginger, Mexican agave and Italian lemons. A scoop of vanilla bean ice cream is added to the Golden Ginger to create the Ginger Float.

Next, regarding The Picnic Basket – two pieces of news:

1)    The eatery is currently closed for a Winter break. It closed on January 1 and is re-opening on January 13.

2)    Next, as I mentioned in a previous article, The Picnic Basket hosted Chez Pim blogger and Santa Cruz resident Pim Techamuanvivit for a Curry Night benefit on November 13. The very worthy cause? Thai flood victims. I attended the event (the food was fabulous) but I neglected to report on the results, and they are definitely worth sharing: Pim’s benefit brought in $2,926. Go Pim! Go Picnic Basket! And good job, Santa Cruz folks, for showing such strong support.
