Santa Cruz Mountains winegrowers invite Pinot lovers to explore the elusive character of minerality in Pinot Noir at the 9th annual Pinot Paradise Technical Session on March 22, 2013 at Mountain Winery in Saratoga, California.
Pinot Paradise celebrates the Pinot Noirs of the Santa Cruz Mountains. This session, 'Minerality: Taste and Terroir', will explore the influences of terroir and chemistry that create this characteristic, and what it is, including the debate surrounding its existence. "We claim to taste minerality in our wines, but there is little research or scientific evidence for it. Is it real, or an illusion?” said Megan Metz, Executive Director. The program includes a tasting of Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noirs, and according to Prudy Foxx, Viticultural Consultant, minerality is a common characteristic of the region's wines.
The keynote speakers are Dr. James Kennedy, Ph.D., Professor, Chair and Director of the Department of Viticulture and Enology, University of California, Fresno, who will explore the chemistry and identifiable markers found in wines that are generally recognized for their expression of minerality; and Josh Jensen, founder and proprietor of Calera Wine Company, who will share his perspective on terroir and his story in creating Pinot Noir known for its minerality. As well, the program will include a panel of winemakers discussing minerality and tasting their Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noirs, including Duncan Meyers of Arnot Roberts; Bradley Brown of Big Basin Vineyards; Nathan Kandler of Thomas Fogarty Winery and Vineyards; and Jim Schultze of Windy Oaks Estate Vineyards and Winery. This panel will be moderated by David Glancy, Master Sommelier, and founder of the San Francisco Wine School.

The Pinot Paradise weekend continues on Saturday, March 23 with a self-guided Pathways tour of the region's wineries, featuring barrel tastings, library wines, and special events and offerings at each participating winery. Tickets for Pathway to Pinot Paradise are $25. A second Ultimate Pinot Noir Winemakers Dinner will be held at Shadowbrook Restaurant in Capitola Saturday 6:00-8:00pm with dinner prepared by Executive Chef, Ashley Hosmer. On Sunday March 24 the Grand Cruz Tasting with over 30 wineries pouring Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noirs will take place from 2:00-5:00pm at Villa Ragusa Conference Center in Campbell, CA. The Santa Cruz Mountains appellation was among the first to be defined by mountain topography, following the fog line along the coast to encompass the highest vineyards on the ridge tops as high as 2600 feet elevation. The region encompasses the Santa Cruz Mountain range and extends from Woodside in the north to Watsonville in the south; from Monterey Bay along the coast to Silicon Valley inland.
