Mac and cheese – it’s just about the favorite pairing in the world – that is – after wine and cheese.

On President’s Day, Monday, February 20, 2012, there is an opportunity to dare to pair. Artisan cheeses – selected by the premier purveyors of Los Gatos taste, Fromage and Specialties at 33 East Main Street in Los Gatos – will be matched with the incomparable wines of Cooper-Garrod.

Family owned and operated in the picturesque hills above Saratoga, Cooper-Garrod Estate Vineyards has a history that dates back to 1893 with the purchase of lands from the Mount Eden Orchard and Vineyard Company.

NASA meets wine in the Saratoga Hills

George Cooper, educated as a mining engineer with an interest in local history and geology, and trained as a pilot in WWII, became a NASA test pilot. Facing retirement in 1973, George wanted something to do with all of his spare “retirement” time. To him, it seemed to be natural to plant a vineyard and to start making wine – at least for his family. As George’s passion grew, so did the wine production from the Cooper-Garrod family estate and winery.

As winemaking turned serious – a studied craftsman emerged

Winemaker Emeritus George Cooper refined his craft by learning from his fellow vintners in the Santa Cruz Mountains, Napa Valley, Burgundy, and Bordeaux. Today, the family has assumed the mantle from George. Vineyard manager, Jan Garrod follows in his grandfather’s footsteps. Family members Bill and Doris Cooper, continue the family tradition by expertly guiding winemaking, sales and marketing.
